Making Magnet Copilot’s AI capabilities available offline
Across almost every industry and application, advances in AI have been prompting changes that can have major effects on digital forensic examinations. While the rapid development and availability of AI can be leveraged for malicious purposes, it can also level the playing field to give examiners another tool to help them keep pace with AI-generated media and the explosion of data in investigations.
We initially introduced the early access of Magnet Copilot as a cloud-based integration for Axiom and Axiom Cyber to help you quickly surface relevant evidence and identify deepfake media. To bring the powerful AI capabilities of Magnet Copilot to even more Axiom users, we are now making the early access to these capabilities available for offline use.
Quickly surface relevant data with Q&A functionality
If you have previously used Magnet Copilot, the appearance and functionality of the Q&A feature will be quite familiar. With Magnet Copilot offline, you can enter questions about conversation threads or web searches in a chat style interface and Magnet Copilot will highlight relevant artifacts from your case. The responses provided through the interface include citations for the case data so that you can easily validate the results and investigate further.
The main change to this functionality with the move to the offline model is that processing is now done all at once, for all of the data you are examining. So instead of uploading individual files to the cloud, you simply process all evidence at one time to start applying the power of AI to your case, helping you quickly highlight potentially relevant evidence for further investigation.
Identifying deepfake images
With the transition to make Magnet Copilot AI functionality available offline, the synthetic media detection capability has been relocated to the Magnet.AI classifier so that it can be used alongside all the other classifiers. Helping you to quickly comb through evidence and automatically detect potential deepfake media along with potential pictures of drugs, weapons, nudity, child abuse and more.
As with the Q&A functionality, with the offline version of this capability in Magnet.AI there is no need to upload individual images for analysis, the processing of multiple pieces of evidence is run all at once helping to expediate your investigations across even more media.
Investigating AI-generated videos
Another feature of Magnet Copilot online was the integration with Medex Forensics cutting-edge solution for file structure analysis of video files to help verify and authenticate where video files originated, if they are camera-original content, and if they have been edited or generated with tools such as face-swap or re-face.
Since we initially started the Magnet Copilot journey, we’ve acquired Medex Forensics and are extremely proud and excited to have them as part of the Magnet Forensics team! The ability to review video with Medex Forensics technology is also still available as part of this early access initiative, but it is now an option when you right-click on an appropriate video file in Axiom Examine. Analysis of video files does require a connection to the internet, but videos processed with Medex technology remain on the local system, with only the metadata of the file sent to Medex servers for analysis.
Bringing AI offline
To make the AI capabilities of Magnet Copilot available to more examiners in their day-to-day investigations, we have transitioned the early access of deepfake detection and Q&A capabilities to Axiom users that are not connected to the internet or cannot upload case data to the cloud.
We have worked to ensure that the offline model could be run on a standard workstation CPU that can run Magnet Axiom. So, no GPUs or advanced workstations are required to use these capabilities on your local workstation.
There will be continued development of the cloud-based version of Magnet Copilot for our cloud native applications but moving the features of Magnet Copilot offline opens the opportunity for more Axiom users to experience the benefits of AI in their local environment.

Getting started with Magnet Copilot offline
To start using the offline version of Magnet Copilot in Axiom for yourself, update to Axiom 8.6, or request a free trial of Axiom, and follow the prompts to install the offline version of Magnet Copilot. Unlike the previous version of the early access to Magnet Copilot, no additional login is required. You can simply navigate to these areas to try out these features.
Magnet Copilot and synthetic media detection are being provided as part of an early access program so if you have input or feedback on these features we would love to hear from you – drop us a line at email to let us know what you think.
